Walk the Talk

The idea of ’walkability’ has gained greater prominence in cities throughout the world in recent years. It is in essence a measure of how friendly an environment is to walking. Many cities have adopted principles of walkability suggested by recognisable figures such as Jane Jacobs, Jan Gehl, and Jeff Speck upon recognising the environmental, economic, and even social benefit of reducing the reliance on motorised transportation, and promoting a walkable city.

The objective of the project is to gather the various existing principles of a walkable city, understand the status of walkability and urban relationships in Singapore, and eventually, to identify the potential of design communication in inspiring more meaningful conversations about walking in Singapore. The research is present in the form of a directory-like map, prompting viewers to navigate around the display with a legend that contains interesting insights on the walkable city.
